The rights of those who could not claim them

Uḥud had left Madinah full of widows and orphans, in a society where a woman did not inherit and could herself be inherited. Into that came a surah that names the daughter’s share, the wife’s share and the mother’s share in exact fractions, and tells the guardian of an orphan that what he swallows of the child’s property is fire.
