What stays with you

Mishkāt has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. It collects nothing about anyone who reads it, children included, and sends nothing to the people who make it — on the website or in the Android app.

Kept on your device

Your notes and bookmarks, the place you reached in each surah, the days you have read, your khatm plan and your settings are kept on your device — in this browser, or in the app’s own storage — and are sent nowhere. Clearing the site’s data, or uninstalling the app, deletes them; Settings can export them to a file first.

Some of what is asked for from elsewhere is kept on your device for a while too, so that a surah opened twice is asked for once.

Asked for from elsewhere

To show you the Qur’an and what has been written on it, Mishkāt asks for it from those who publish it. Each request carries what is asked for — a surah, a translation, a word — and what every request on the internet carries: your device’s address. What each of them does with a request is in its own policy.

  • api.quran.com, the Quran Foundation’s — the text, the translations, the meanings of the words, the tajweed marks, much of the tafsir, and search
  • verses.quran.com and everyayah.com — the recitations
  • cdn.jsdelivr.net — al-Mukhtaṣar and al-Jalālayn in English
  • al-nuqta.com — a word’s root, its grammar and the classical lexicons, when you study it
  • ibntaymiyyahmajmu.github.io — The Clear Qur’an, if you read it
  • ibntaymiyyahmajmu.github.io — in the app, the books of grammar, readings and fiqh the ayah study opens

A search sends the words you search for to api.quran.com, which finds the ayat that match. Nothing else you write — your notes least of all — leaves your device.

A link to another site — tafsir.app, sunnah.com, a lexicon — takes you there, under that site’s own policy.

Where the pages come from

The website is served by GitHub Pages, which, like any host, sees each page that is asked for. The Android app carries the pages inside it and asks for none of them.

In the Android app

The app asks for nothing on your phone but the internet: not your contacts, your location, your camera, your microphone or your files. While a recitation plays it shows a notification with its controls, so that the recitation can go on with the screen off.
